Students who will be admitted to Āvartan Gurukul will need to have prerequisites. Since this is not a music/dance class and more of an art forms school for excellence, the required criteria will be followed before their selection which is given below:

  • Age: Between 15 years to 35 years
  • Prior education in the desired art form: Minimum 3 years
  • Requirement of passed exams: Nil

The Āvartan aspirants will have to undergo an audition of their performance for a minimum of 20 minutes followed by an interview by the Guru/Assistant Teacher.

One of the important requirements for admission is commitment of the student to take the art form as his/her career.

Āvartan coaching is designed to create proficient artistes. Keeping this in mind, a student will be expected to spend minimum of 3 years at the Gurukul. Whether he/she is proficient enough to branch out on their own will be proclaimed by the Guru that he has learnt with. He / She may be advised to spend more learning time by the Guru if the desired exit point maturity is not attained by the student. However, if the student wants to leave, Āvartan will not bind him/her by any contract or agreement.

Āvartan is initiated and designed to make artistes who take their art form as their profession and it is committed to train a student till he has attained a level to branch out on his own.

Although 3 years is the indicative time period specified by the Gurus, more time may be allowed for a student if he proves his mettle.

“Āvartan” has designed the learning in a holistic manner.

The students will be shaped keeping in mind all the qualities they will need to possess to become a noteworthy artiste. During the first 3 years, in addition to regular knowledge imparting process, they will also be subjected to off line learning through audio-video aids.

With a reasonable amount of expertise and knowledge acquisition, they will be made to coach junior students. This is designed and stems out of conviction that one of the better ways to gain knowledge is through sharing it.

The students will also be expected to volunteer to participate in the Gurukul’s social contribution activity, where they will be required to perform in diverse areas for lower income groups, specifically in schools to offer a unique experience of our culture to those who are otherwise deprived of it. This activity will also serve to provide the much-needed platform for these students to showcase their talent and skills and get the concert experience.

In addition to the main focus activity of coaching deserving talent and carving artistes out of them, “Āvartan” has worked some more activities in order to bolster the main activity which will become largely complimentary to coaching.

The additional activities are listed below:
  1. Providing stage to the students for concert experience: Although, this will have to be done after some minimum level achieved by a student, some small “Baithaks” will be initiated to allow the students to present their learnings. This may become a monthly activity.
  2. Creating an Audio-Video Library: At Āvartan, we believe that listening to or viewing quality performances of legends from even different Gharanas frequently, enriches every student and adds to their maturity. So, the Gurukul has plans to develop a library of such Audio and Video recordings and make them available to students whenever they wish.
  3. At Āvartan, sustainability is the topmost criterion when it comes to propagation of art forms. In order to widen the audience base beyond the “Classes” and the urban areas, we have made a large pool of quality but not very well-known artistes to perform in deeper parts of the country at nominal remuneration. This is sure to inculcate the nuances of our culture in them, which otherwise is very difficult to achieve. The same responsibility will be shouldered by the students of Gurukul once they achieve a level enough to inspire others through their art form.
  4. Organize music festivals to offer stage to deserving upcoming artistes alongside the established ones that will enable to be taken note of by the music enthusiasts. This is a very well tried and tested module by many organizations in India and “Ävartan” feels they should follow the same to ensure results

Student Apprentice Program

“Ävartan” has designed the learning in a holistic manner.

The students will be shaped keeping in mind all the qualities they will need to possess to become a noteworthy artiste. During the first 3 years, in addition to regular knowledge imparting process, they will also be subjected to off line learning through audio-video aids.

The Student-Apprentice Program

“Āvartan” has designed its programs in a meticulous, research-driven fashion that combines the wisdom and legacy-based experience of all our great masters. Our shishyas will hone all the necessary qualities required to turn them into full-fledged, noteworthy artists. With that in mind, here are the tentative steps for our “Student-Apprentice” program. Do note that these are bound to change according to the individual student’s needs, challenges and evolution.
1-3 years In addition to our regular, on-site processes, shishyas will also undergo offline learning through audio-video aids.
3+ years After acquiring the necessary know-how and expertise, shishyas will be made to coach junior students. This is designed and stems out of conviction that one of the better ways to gain knowledge is through sharing it.
Beyond Curricula Students will be expected to volunteer for Gurukul’s social contribution activity, where they are required to perform in diverse areas for lower income groups. Schools, in particular, are our favoured venues where we can offer a unique experience of our culture to those who are otherwise deprived of it. This activity will also serve to provide the much-needed platform for these students to showcase their talent and skills and get the concert experience.

Integration and Live Performances

Āvartan does not believe in an ‘in-and-out’ process when it comes to our students and the relationships they cultivate with us. Going above and beyond the teaching period, we also equip them with skills that allow them to not only disseminate their art, but also do it in a sustainable fashion wherein they can provide for themselves and their dependents, if need be.
We do this through Concert-Conditioning: We provide a stage to our students for concert experience after they achieve a certain level of proficiency in the form of small “Baithaks” This may become a monthly activity.
Audio-Video Library At Āvartan, we believe that listening to, or viewing quality performances of legends from different Gharanas enriches every student and adds to their maturity. So, the Gurukul has plans to develop a library of such Audio and Video recordings and make them available to students.
Symbiotic Sustainability It is our firm belief that our music and its consumption have to be sustainable. This is why we cultivate a pool of artists who perform in the less accessible, remote climes of the country for nominal remuneration. For the students, it increases their cultural and artistic experience while the audiences can easily access performances and nuances of our artforms.
Music Festivals We help in organizing music festivals to offer a stage to deserving upcoming artistes alongside established ones. This helps music enthusiasts discover new talent to be recommended elsewhere.
